Permablitz #212 – Reservoir
In the spirit of the populist movement of our current political world climate I’ve decided to give a voice to the blitzer. Thus, I bring you the best quotes of the day followed by my explanatory comments if required.
Weather of the day of the blitz.
Such a typical Melbourne weather today.
Lucy
The hosts
A young family, Sarah and Cameron, and said baby, Elka.
Shhh, the baby is sleeping
Cattie
The location
For the uninitiated, Reservoir Heights is an up and coming suburb with a 10% annual house price growth* nestled among the most entertaining tram line, 86, and the second largest Kmart in the Southern Hemisphere**.
*Domain.com.au
**Maureen is currently living under a false identity and in fear of persecution following an Edward Snowden like expose of the illegal late arvo after-school activities of the local high school students in the wide aisles of the store. Apparently, they are perfect for playing cricket. Not as good as Burwood though, the largest Kmart store in the Southern hemisphere.
The activities
Moving the biggest pile of soil and compost you ever did see (thanks to The Green Centre for the donation!), kitting out some wicking beds, planting out an urban orchard, setting us a chilled out seating space, planting out some herbs and veggies, and “the human water cup chain” – aka too many blitzers working one task at once. See the pictorial essay below.
The fashions of the day.
Among the gum boots Kim vibrantly demonstrated that style and gardening are not mutually exclusive. I think we should start ‘the most stylish blitzer’ award.
The legends of the day
Terry
Much has been written about Terry, the legend. Only in September last year he led his team to glorious victory with a Guinness World record for the largest hugelkultur in the Southern hemisphere. These days he does not need to aim for the records and awards. Even the simple task of drilling a hole draws a crowd. See another pictorial essay.
And that’s how you make a hole!
Terry
Farting around with spaces.
Terry
Creating problem and then fixing them.
Terry
Terry’s critique on the modern society that doubled as an explanation for the need for said hole.
Any questions?
No?
Good.
Terry
Seila
Another legend of Permablitz Melbourne. He will answer any dirt, plant or fungus question before you can say ‘ok google!’
Amanda
A legend in the making. Very pregnant, very easy to spot and very on the ball. I was initially sceptical about her ‘I’ll be back in six months’ comment. But I reckon she will be!
Fun facts
Earthworms rule.
Anoushka
Magnolia leaves are edible. However, confirm with wiki.
Chrissie
Overheard on the construction site.
I hope it levelled.
Lisa
Discussing raised wicking beds where it’s a fundamental aspect of the construction.
Soil, soil, more soil.
Karen
This resonates with anyone with even one blitz under their belt.
I think within the tolerance.
Joce
This off-hand comment sparked a profound discussion about the objective and subjective merits of tolerance.
Is it upside down?
Hannah
Another rhetorical question.
What we waiting for?
Chissie
Now, that one was just straight from ‘Waiting for Godot’ ***
***An impenetrable Irish literary classic.
No shit.
Terry
In spirit for the current demand for fast news I tried collecting some real time reviews of the blitz.
Jai planned to come to me once he’d thought of one. Another blitzer planned to come back to me after a glass of wine.
Andrea, however, summed it up perfectly:
There is no better place to be on a Sunday afternoon.
Andrea
The achievements of the day.
- Perfect garden beds (and levelled!!)
- An urban orchard
- Herb garden and sitting area
- Vege garden
Channelling Jerry Springer: “Final thought”.
Today is the first day of the rest of my life.
Kim
I’m going to ache tomorrow!
Agnes
Second that
Phil
All in all, it was yet another perfect blitz. (I only wish I could stayed for longer).
