Permablitz #176 – Lower Plenty
The Permablitz in Lower Plenty was an unusual one. Set on a beautiful hillside surrounded by nature and parks it had everything a Permie loves: Excellent hosts, eager Blitzers, water catchments, slope, fruit trees, something to keep the children occupied and swales!
The 2 acre property was too large to be blitzed all at once so head designer Martin focussed on implementing a few features and making it a great day. Blitzers were mainly divided into three groups. The main group helped prepare the previously excavated swales for planting, another group proceeded on building raised garden beds and the last group connected the unused watercatchment of the long driveway to a pond and the swale system.
The beautiful design was focussed on slowing the water down by stopping it in a series of ponds and contour swales where it can infiltrate and nourish fruiting and ornamental plants before it ends up in a swimming pond at the bottom of the property.
We had great fun and a glorious lunchtime feast which was enhanced by a presentation on integrated pest management and attracting beneficial insects into our gardens. A big thanks to everybody involved, it was a great day of learning and blitzin’ !
