Permablitz #177 Surrey Hills
The weather was perfect on this January Sunday afternoon in Surrey Hills, cloudy and not too hot.
We joined Melissa and her small family to transform her garden into a place that she always wanted to live in. Melissa had a permablitz design from one of her friends and the three facilitators helped with translating the ideas on the ground. We started with some early birds at 9 AM and prepared some cardboard for sheet mulching. Around 24 Blitzers joined to help with the work and learn about Permaculture in action.
After the introduction into the design and a lively warm up we split up into groups to work on different jobs on Melissa’s garden. The front of the house saw a general overhaul with tree circles put in and some invasive trees taken out to make room for sunlight. The back of the house was where the real party was at. Kikuyu got removed, invasive trees taken out and swales weeded and mulched. A grey water pipe was put in to enable Melissa to use her laundry water to passively drain into her planted swale mounds. The chicken run door was put into place and the coop repaired. Then raised veggie beds were assembled and put into place next to her kitchen door.
This Blitz was a very transformative one and I am sure you can see that on the photos. Unfortunately not enough time was left at the end of the day to finish up all the jobs that were planned. Maybe a follow up working bee will bring back some of the Blitzers who were eager to see the tasks finished and the garden transformed.
