Permablitz 156 in Mill Park
We are back for another Blitz in the Mill Park Food Forest.
On a partially sunny Sunday on the 16 March 2014 12 people and an Irish wolfhound shared good moments among the trees. There was even a journalist from Germany who is going to write an article about Permablitz!
The garden at Mill Park Salvation Army has a number of robust garden beds and a healthy and thriving demonstration food forest garden, which was planted last year. Previously amazing berms and swales have been put down to support fruit trees on contour, now they need some help to grow!
The main task was to weed the berms and sheet mulch to give the newly planted fruit trees some room to breathe. With the help of many eager hands and a massive round hay bale that barely fitted on a truck the preparations were made to have a good day in the sunshine.
Sheet mulching works best when each layer is wetted thoroughly and a big load of organic mulch is piled on top. Don’t let it get too dry or too wet. After a few hours of work an amazing potted meal was shared by all the hungry workers.
After lunch the sheet mulching continued. The volunteers layered cardboard, manure, topsoil and hay. At one point in the afternoon there was a small adventure running away from a wasp nest!
In the end a neat swale compliments the Mill Park Food Forest. Nice work!
