Wicking Bed Workshop and Working Bee @ Melbourne Food Hub with VEG!
Date(s) - July 29, 2018
Time - 12:00 am
This is a third-party event not organised by Permablitz. We've added it because we reckon it looks pretty good!
Location - Alphington Farmers Market/Melbourne Food Hub
Come along and get your hands dirty at a wicking bed building workshop, facilitated by Very Edible Gardens! It is the first workshop on site as we begin to transform into Melbourne’s first community food hub, a collaborative project between Sustain: The Australian Food Network and Melbourne Farmers Market.
Wicking beds are a type of raised bed containing a water reservoir in the bottom, enabling water to ‘wick’ up into the soil and water plants from below. We’ll be learning all about how we can upcycle reclaimed materials to build mobile raised wicking beds that use less water than traditional raised beds and allow us to grow healthy food in contaminated urban areas. The wicking beds we build on the day will be used to plant micro edible forest gardens as well as being used for intensive vegetable production at the Melbourne Food Hub.
The facilitated workshop will go for two hours, followed by a two hour working bee using our new skills to build wicking beds for urban agriculture on site.
There will be tea and snacks provided.
Hope to see you there!
