Practical Self Sufficiency competition winner announced
A big congratulations to Gladys for her competition-winning photo below. We received some cracking good photos from the blitzers out there – great to see so much food passion!
Gladys is only 9, but has already been to a permablitz! Here she is with her pet chickens (they love to play chasey!) Below is her entry submission:
Hi, my name is Gladys. This photo was taken 8 months ago when I was 9 years old. The best things I have grown in the past 12 months are my chickens! Here they are, I positioned them on the tree, told them to stay for a ‘family’ photo. Then, I went home to convince my mum to be a photographer for once. Mum was absolutely shocked to see all my chickens were on the tree waiting for me! But you can see some of them were dozing away because of the long wait. The chicken I held in my arm is Beecky, I raised her up from a fluffy baby chick. Snowy (the white one) and Myrtle (the chocolate colored one) were given to me as the previous owners could not keep them anymore. They were not the ‘friendly’ type and wouldn’t let you get closer than two meters. It took me a few months to win their hearts. Nowadays they want and even demand daily cuddle from me which I am always happy to give. I have learnt that chickens are very social, they like human interactions, they like massage, swinging on the swing, and listening to me singing songs to them. They fellow me around like dogs, I can even play chase game with them. I like growing things, vegetables, flowers, trees, animals, and growing them together — the permaculture way (being to a permablitz when I was 7, that was fun! ). For the time being, I think I like to grow chickens the best, I like my chickens and hope all of you like them too!
Well done Gladys – the “Practical Self Suffiency” book is on its way!
